Banstead War Memorial. WW l casualties. The following is an alphabetical list of WWl casualties inscribed on the Banstead War Memorial. Each item is headed by the man's full name if known, followed by his rank and service number where applicable, details of the date of death and any known relatives. Finally each record shows the location of the memorial or cemetery. These basic details are shown by permission of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, as are the pictures of memorials and cemeteries from across the World. In addition to the basic details, more personal information has been added where available as well as some background to the circumstances in which the casualty was lost. Wherever possible, details published have been cross checked with different sources. This has not always been possible and in some cases, the casualty is still unidentified. | ARTHUR, HENRY BARTLE COMPTON
Major Royal Field Artillery 5th Bde. Died 10-August-1916 aged 36 killed in Action. Son of John Raynor Arthur and Aileen Rice of Normandy Park, Guildford, Surrey, England. John Raynor Arthur was born on 20 November 1830 and died on 19 November 1903 at age 72. Previously was in the Bombay Civil Service. Henry Bartle Compton Arthur was born on 14 October 1879 and his birth was registered in Kensington. He had an older brother, Edmond J Arthur born in India c1873. In the 1881 census, the family (no mother in evidence) was at High St, Hartley Wintney, Hants, probably back from India c 1875. In 1891 they were at 11 Queen's Gate, Kensington, this time the mother is there but no father, and 7 servants. In 1901 they were at Normandy Park, Ash, Surrey, but neither Edmund nor Henry is recorded presumably because they were away in India. Indian Army records show that HBC Arthur was commissioned on th 28th July 1900 and attained the rank of Captain on the 21st August 1911. At that time he was with the Royal Horse & Royal Field Artillery in India. He later gained the rank of Major whilst still in the service of the Royal Field Artillery. Henry was killed at the Somme but it appears that Edmund survived the war as he is listed in the telephone directory for 1926-7 as Major E.J. Arthur at 'Utterstone', Beacon Way, Banstead. It is very likely that Major H.B.C. Arthur's name came to be inscribed on the Banstead War Memorial as a result of his brother's residency in the Village. A visitor to the Gordon Dump cemetery noticed 4 men were all killed on the same day from the same RFA Bde. and this seemed unusual to him. They are all buried together and one is Major HBC Arthur. The other three are Lieut. J. V. O'Brien RAMC Attached 5th Bde. RFA Lieut. N. MacIver 5th Bde. RFA 2nd Lieut. H. B. C. MacPherson 5th Bde. RFA Grave/Memorial Reference: I. A. 23. | BALDWIN, JOHN HENRY
Private 231043 London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers)2nd Bn. Secondary Regiment: London Regiment (The Rangers) attd. 12th Bn. Died 28-February-1917 aged 24 Son of Harry and Anna Bella Baldwin, of 3, Devonshire Cottages, Banstead, Surrey. The following account is taken from one surviving page of the All Saints Banstead Parish Magazine which was retained by a relative : PTE. JOHN HENRY BALDWIN joined the London Regiment soon after war broke out. He had from the outset a strenuous experience. He served three months at the Dardanelles, and saw much terrible fighting, but came through all safely, being one of the force which took part in that skillful but melancholy evacuation. He spent a short time in Egypt, and then was sent to France, where he was soon in the thick of it again. In the Battle of the Somme last July he was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans. A letter from a fellow prisoner, an Australian, has just been received, reporting the sad news of his death at the camp of the prisoners-of-war at Langensabya, in Turingia, in Germany. It says that the German doctor did all that was possible to relieve his sufferings but he died of disease which evidently he contracted in camp. He has done his duty manfully and has now joined many another hero in the unseen spiritual world, where fighting is no more. May the Risen Prince of Peace give him eternal rest. Grave Reference: VI. | BLUNT, GEORGE SAMUEL
Private 42270 Royal Fusiliers 6th Bn.(4th City of London Regiment) Died 3-August-1917 aged 35 Son of Mr. William and Mrs. Annie Blunt, of Banstead, Surrey; Husband of Nellie G. Blunt, of 63, Fishponds Rd., Tooting Bec Rd., London. Prior to enlisting, George was a decorator who lived at 4 Lyme Regis Road, Banstead. It seems likely that Private George Blunt was lost during one of the worst battles of WWl, the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele near Ypres. Ground conditions during the whole Ypres-Passendale action were atrocious. Continuous shelling destroyed drainage canals in the area, and unseasonable heavy rain turned the whole area into a sea of mud and water-filled shell-craters. The troops walked up to the front over paths made of duckboards laid across the mud, often carrying up to one hundred pounds (45 kg) of equipment. It was possible for them to slip off the path into the craters and drown before they could be rescued. The trees were reduced to blunted trunks, the branches and leaves torn away, and the bodies of men buried after previous actions were often uncovered by the rain or later shelling. The image below shows the record of George's recruitment in December 1915. NOTE FROM WEBMASTER The Surrey History Trust have been asked for their permission to include the records below. | BUCKLE, ARCHIE STEWART
Brigadier General Royal Artillery 17th Division. Died 18-August-1916 aged 47 Son of Archibald Lewis Buckle (Capt., Royal Engineers). Husband of the late Mildred Louisa Buckle. Archie Stewart Buckle was commissioned in the Royal Artillery on 17 February 1888. He spent much of his pre-war career serving with the Royal Field Artillery in India, but he also acquired experience and expertise in the handling and issuing of explosives. Major Buckle went to war with the BEF and was wounded in the face in October 1914 and invalided home. Following his recovery, in January 1915, he was appointed GSO1 19th (Western) Division, a New Army formation. Buckle deployed to France with 19th Division in July 1915 and helped plan its costly and abortive baptism of fire on 25 September in the Action at Piètre, part of the battle of Loos. 19th Division was employed three times on the Somme in July 1916, each time as a holding division. On 9 August Buckle was promoted brigadier-general and posted to 17th (Northern) Division as its CRA. Buckle arrived in the middle of the battle of Delville Wood. A week after his appointment he was suddenly taken ill and died two days later of meningitis. Grave Reference: II. F. 23. HEILLY STATION CEMETERY, MERICOURT-L'ABBE Somme, France. The following account is taken from the one surviving page of All Saints Banstead Parish magazine. Lce Corpl. ALAN GUEST, Royal Fusiliers must be remembered amongst the Brave Banstead lads who have fallen in the fight for freedom and Fatherland. He was killed in the Great Arras battle apparently on the 13th of April. His officer writes:- "He was in the Company I am commanding. He got wounded in the attack but wouldn't go back, but continued to fight bravely. He was afterwards wounded again, mortally. I spoke to him before his death, and his last words were ; ' promise me you will tell my wife that I died like a good soldier, and I shall die happy.' Your husband was one of the bravest and most reliable men in my Company, and but for his death, I should have recommended him for the Military medal. I can assure you his death is a great loss to everyone, and I must express my deepest sympathy with you in your great loss." Alan joined up at the very beginning. He did not wait to be fetched! He was one of the force despatched to the Dardanelles, but shortly after landing he had a bad attack of Dysentry, and was sent to hospital at Malta. Returning home to England, he remained in hospital for about seven months. A year ago he went over with his battalion to France, where he........unfortunately, this text is all that survives of the Banstead Parish magazine's Roll of Honour. Private PO/11648 Royal Marine Light Infantry - H.M.S. Bulwark. Died 26-November-1914 aged 30 Son of Robert and Elizabeth Muggeridge, of 65, High St., Cosham, Hants. Native of Banstead, Surrey. HMS Bulwark, a battleship of 15,000 tons, was moored to No.17 buoy in Kethole Reach on the River Medway, almost opposite the town of Sheerness, Isle of Sheppy, Kent. It was one of the ships forming the 5th Battle Squadron. On the 26th November 1914, the usual ship's routine was taking place when a roaring and rumbling sound was heard and a huge sheet of flame and debris shot upwards. The ship lifted out of the water and fell back. There was a thick cloud of grey smoke and further explosions. When the smoke eventually cleared, the Bulwark had sunk without trace. Only 14 men survived from the ship's compliment of approximately 760 men. The full article including the statement by Winston Churchill can be found at HMS Bulwark - NHCRA Memorial Reference: 6. Private 31863 Northumberland Fusiliers 12/13th Bn. Died 27-May-1918 aged 21 in Aisne, France. Previously worked as a grocer's assistant at Geoff Pushman's shop in Banstead. Willie is remembered in a book called Geoff's Banstead. We had a young man working for us in the shop called Willie Nash. I took to him at once, and he was very fond of me. Most fellows of his age wouldn't have wanted to be seen with a child, but he often wheeled me up the road in my pushchair. Willie used to sing the songs of the day while weighing up sugar, and taught me all the words. "Weigh up the yellow crystals this afternoon, Willie," I'd say,"and we'll sing." One day Willie came to work very excited. He'd bought a gramophone and asked if I'd come round to his house and see it. How thrilled we both were. Willie was my first friend and partner in singing comic songs. Two of our speciality numbers were 'Hold your hand out, naughty boy' and 'Hello hello who's your lady friend?' When the war broke out in 1914, Willie was one of the first to volunteer.(Being only seventeen, he put his age on by twelve months). On leave he stood against the door as we scratched his height on it - so we could check whether he'd grown next time we saw him. He never came back." On the 27 May 1918, Private 61863 William John Nash would have been under the command of the Major-General D G M Campbell 21st Division, Brigadier-General G H Gater of the 62nd Brigade, whilst serving with the 12/13th Northumberland Fusiliers. That day was the first day of the Third Battle of the Aisne (river)which was a German offensive during World War I that focused on capturing the Chemin des Dames Ridge before the American Expeditionary Force could arrive in France. On the morning of 27 May 1918, the Germans began a bombardment of the Allied front lines with over 4,000 artillery pieces. The British suffered heavy losses, as they had been ordered to mass together in the front trenches which made the easy artillery targets. There was worse to come as the bombardment was followed by a poison gas drop. A short edited extract from 8th Division 1914 - 1918, by Lt.-Colonel J.H. Boraston & Bax graphically describes the events of the day that Private W Nash was killed. It was one o'clock in the morning of the 27th May, punctual to the predicted time, that the German bombardment was loosed. The whole of IX Corps front and many back areas - railheads, ammunition dumps and the like - were drenched with gas shell. Outpost lines were assailed in addition by trench mortars of every calibre, and the Battle Zone received the terrible bombardment from artillery of all natures. Our artillery positions were also violently attacked with gas shell and H.E. and had area shoots carried out upon them, with the result that by 6am most of our guns North of the river were out of action. A mist which rose into being with the opening of the bombardment, as though evoked at the will of the German Higher Command and in fact accentuated by the enemy's gas and smoke shells, grew steadily thicker as the night proceeded and made the task of defence additionally difficult. It was indeed, almost uncanny how in this spring of 1918 the luck of the weather favoured the Germans in attack. On each preceding night spent on the new front the weather had been clear and when, for the third time, the troops of the division found their defence hampered by a dense blanket of fog, men and officers began firmly to believe that the enemy had discovered means to put down a mist whenever it was wanted. Once the gas had lifted the main infantry assault by 17 German Sturmtruppen divisions commenced, led by Crown Prince Wilhelm, the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Taken completely by surprise and with their defences spread thin, the Allies were unable to stop the attack and the German army advanced through a 40 km gap in the Allied lines. Reaching the Aisne in under six hours, the Germans smashed through eight Allied divisions on a line between Reims and Soissons, pushing the Allies back to the river Vesle and gaining an extra 15 km of territory by nightfall. Willie Nash is remembered on the Soissons Memorial, along with almost 4000 officers and men who died during the battles of the Aisne and the Marne. | Private C/60448 Royal Fusiliers 8th Bn. Died 13-April-1917 aged 30 Son of Charles and Elizabeth Rosa Skelton, of 10, Pound Rd., Banstead, Surrey. Husband of Edith Mary Smewing of 15 Ferndale Road Banstead
Alfred Skelton initially joined the East Surrey Regiment (21990) prior to moving to the Royal Fusiliers. The following account is taken from the one surviving page of the All Saints Banstead Parish magazine: ALFRED SKELTON, Royal Fusiliers, has given his life for his country, and for the cause of justice and liberty. He fell in the Great Battle of Arras, which commenced on Easter Monday, the 9th of April (1917). A kind and considerate letter from the Chaplain dated 12th April brought the bad news that he was brought into hospital that morning dangerously wounded in the head, and unconscious, and that there was scarcely any hope. This letter was immediately followed by a second letter reporting that he had died the next morning. He was reverently buried in a British soldier's cemetery at Rouen. Poor fellow, he had only been six months at the Front, having gone across to France last October. A Brother, Thomas Skelton, was killed quite early in the war and another brother Stanley, is at present lying in hospital badly wounded. ( Stanley died of his wounds on the 9th of December 1919 and is the only one of the three Skelton brothers who died as a result of the war, not remembered on the Banstead War Memorial.) A fourth brother, Gordon Skelton lied about his age and was recruited in the Devonshire Regiment. He was sent to France, but his mother wrote to the War office telling them he was only 14 years old. He was returned from France and released into the care of his parents at 10 Pound Road Banstead. A fifth brother, Norman Percy Skelton, was two years younger than Gordon and did not take part in the war although he joined up on the 14th April 1920. Grave Reference: O. VIII. H. 12. ST.
